Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. Phil. 4:8
Our words have power. They can encourage someone, they can rip a person to pieces; they can speak eterna, kife to someone or condemnation. We need to choose our words carefully.
God used words to create the universe. While we can do no such thing, our words do create situations. Why does Paul tell us to think on the good and the pure? If we keep good/pure thoughts in our heart and mind, (things related to God) we will look for them and find them.
If we keep our hearts and mind filled with thoughts and ideas contrary to the love of God – and His mercy, grace, forgiveness, hope, joy, etc. – that’s what we will find. The poor substitutes the world offers — not true joy but laughing at other’s misfortunes; not true love but lust; not mercy but a trap; not grace but what we deserve. All those things do not come from Him and should not fill our minds. The more we look for the bad, the more we will find it. The more we don’t notice the good, the more we will continue to believe there is little good to be found.
Choose words carefully. They do create a world — not a physical one but a mental one, a frame of mind.
Building a World in Your Story
So, if that’s true, think about the words you use in your writing to create worlds. Every word contributes to the image that is forming in the reader’s mind. Using descriptive words, strong words in tight sentences create intriguing worlds. Consider the following two sentences and determine which one would evoke the better response:
- The new society was very patriotic.
- David stepped off the bus to see flags snapping in the breeze, men in uniform stood at the intersection and he heard snatches of music from a marching band.
It’s easy enough to find patriotic words … Google it! Or download my list of patriotic words just to get you started.
It’s easy to build lists for any type of story you want to write. Google the term or keep a notebook where you collect words on different topics. It can be fun. Think of it as a new hobby!
Ultimately, whether we are just going through our day, trying to give glory to God or building a story, words have specific meanings and purpose. Use them appropriately!
